Liebe Freunde der Raab und JR Galerien,
„Können sie 3 Maler oder Schriftsteller benennen? Wie sieht es mit Illustratoren aus? Den meisten Menschen wird dies schwer fallen. Illustratoren sind oftmals nicht sichtbar, auch wenn sie sehr präsent sind. Sie können Bücher oder Musikvideos prägen und erfolgreich machen und dennoch im Schatten des Schriftstellers oder der Band stehen. Sie arbeiten heute meist digital, früher mit Feder und Tusche, vielfach am Schreibtisch im dunklen Kämmerlein. Illustratoren sind Dienstleister und bekommen in den meistens Fällen ihre Inhalte vorgegeben. Bereits vor 1000 Jahren arbeiteten Illustratoren in Klöstern, um die heilige Schrift noch gewaltiger erscheinen zu lassen. Doch was entsteht außerhalb des Zeichentischs und was, wenn es keinen Auftraggeber gibt? Die hier gezeigte Mischung gewährt einen Blick auf den freien Stil und Sichtweisen der oft „Übersehenen“ und stellt die Frage: Sind Künstler auch Illustratoren und umgekehrt?“
Der Lebensmittelpunkt aller Künstler/ Illustratoren ist Berlin, einmal im Monat treffen sie sich zum Illustratorenstammstisch. Als Auftragskünstler gehen sie hochprofessionell auf die gewünschte Sachlage ein, als eigenständig wirkende Künstler entwickeln sie eine völlig neue Phantasie. Die Motive stammen aus dem Stadtbild und machen das aus, was Menschen an Berlin fasziniert. Der unverbaute Blick erscheint uns dabei zunächst normal. Dabei ist genau er das Besondere. Wir kennen es von Ingres, dessen Auftragsarbeiten heute viel weniger gefragt sind, als seine freien Werke, die uns wegen ihres historischen Bezugs besonders bewegen und die Kraft haben, uns in historische Welten zu entführen, als seien wir dabeigewesen.
Ähnlich wie Adolf Menzel sich in vielen Zeichnungen dem täglichen Leben seiner Zeit gewidmet hat und wie auch Max Liebermann gerade vom Anblick des Alltäglichen nicht genug bekommen konnte, treffen in dieser Ausstellung Werke aufeinander, die professionell beobachtet und ausgeführt aus Freude am malerischen Ausdruck entstanden sind. Es gibt den intimen, malerischen, manchmal auch skizzenhaften Werken eine Bodenhaftigkeit, die vielleicht in hundert Jahren viel über unser heutiges Leben aussagt, weil sie frei von jeder Intention entstanden sind. Oft hat man den Eindruck, das Motiv sei deshalb festgehalten, weil es für handfeste Überraschungen wie geschaffen ist.
Wir freuen uns auf eine vielfältige Ausstellung, die viel mit dem Bild der Stadt zu tun hat. Die Künstler sind anwesend.
Auch freuen wir uns, am 27. März das Seherlebnis zu wiederholen, und laden Sie ein bei einem Burlesquen Livedrawing mit Rana Hava dabeizusein oder selbst malerisch mit einzugreifen.

Dear friends of the Raab and JR galleries,
on the invitation card, designed with great attention to detail, you can see the concern that prompted El Bocho to propose this exhibition. It is about artist’s artists – an artist recommends other artists. He shares background knowledge, consideration, respect, and exchanges with people who have chosen similar paths in life with his professional colleagues, which El Bocho describes as follows: „Can you name 3 painters or writers? What about illustrators? Most people will find this difficult. Illustrators are often invisible, even if they are very present. They can shape books or music videos and make them successful and still be in the shadow of the writer or the band. Today they mostly work digitally, previously with pen and ink, often at a desk in a dark room. Illustrators are service providers and in most cases their content is given to them. 1000 years ago, illustrators worked in monasteries to make the holy scriptures appear even more powerful. But what is created outside the drawing board and what if there is no client? The mixture shown here provides a glimpse of the free style and perspectives of those who are often „overlooked“ and raises the question: are artists also illustrators and vice versa?“
The center of life for all artists/illustrators is Berlin; they meet once a month for the illustrators‘ get-together. As commissioned artists, they approach the situation in a highly professional manner; as independent artists, they develop a completely new imagination. The motifs come from the cityscape and are what fascinates people about Berlin. The unobstructed view seems normal to us at first. But it is precisely this that is so special. We know it from Ingres, whose commissioned works are much less in demand today than his free works, which move us particularly because of their historical reference and have the power to transport us into historical worlds as if we were there.
In a similar way to how Adolf Menzel devoted many drawings to the daily life of his time and how Max Liebermann could not get enough of the sight of everyday life, this exhibition brings together works that were professionally observed and executed out of a joy of painterly expression. It gives the intimate, painterly, sometimes sketchy works a down-to-earth quality that will perhaps say a lot about our lives today in a hundred years, because they were created without any intention. Often one has the impression that the motif was captured because it was made for tangible surprises.
We are looking forward to a diverse exhibition that has a lot to do with the image of the city. The artists will be present.
We are also looking forward to repeating the viewing experience on March 27th and invite you to take part in a burlesque live drawing with Rana Hava or to get involved in painting yourself.
